How often should I have my eyes examined?
Annual eye examinations are an important part of your vision and health care. Many eye problems are painless and may not have an immediate affect on your vision, so early detection by an eye doctor is crucial in preventing permanent vision loss. Eye doctors often find signs of systemic diseases (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, etc.) during a comprehensive examination as well. With that in mind, all members of your family should have their eyes examined annually or more often if recommended by our doctors.

When should I bring my child in for their first vision examination?
The American Optometric Association recommends that children receive their first vision and eye health examination by an eye doctor at six months of age. Two more examinations are recommended before kindergarten or more often if recommended by the eye doctor and/or pediatrician. Children may experience problems undetectable by parents or pediatricians, so early and regular eye examinations by an eye doctor are essential in preventing permanent vision problems for your child.

What is the right age to begin wearing contact lenses?
There are no age limitations on contact lens wear but a custom fitting by an eye doctor is crucial to success. Personal responsibility is a critical factor, so your child must be reliable in taking care of their lenses on their own before regular contact lens wear is recommended. Ask our doctors about contact lenses during your child’s next examination.

I am diabetic. How often should I have my eyes examined?
Diabetes is the #1 cause of preventable blindness in the United States. All diabetics should have a dilated eye examination annually.

Do you recommend LASIK or other refractive surgery?
There are many factors that determine whether or not you are a good candidate for refractive surgery. The doctors of Center Vision & Contact Lens Clinic co-manage with many excellent local and regional refractive surgeons. If you are interested in refractive surgery, ask our doctors about it at your next examination.
